• General information AND CONTEXTApproximately 55% of the population of the Kasai region is illiterate, with 60% of women and girls over the age of six having received no formal education. Although this situation is common in rural areas of the DRC, it is particularly exacerbated in Kasai due to complex factors. For comparison, only 5.3% of women and girls over six years old in Kinshasa have not received formal education. Access to education is difficult there, especially for girls and displaced people. Girls are particularly disadvantaged due to discriminatory social norms, burden of domestic work, gender inequalities, and high risk of sexual and based violence. on gender (SGBV), including early pregnancies and child marriages [Mott MacDonald, PPEF 2022]. According to the INS, more than 91% of children who have dropped out of primary school in Kasai cite high school fees as the main reason. Other factors include distance from schools, insecurity, early pregnancies and illness. A survey conducted by Save the Children in 2022 also highlights poverty as a major barrier, with children - particularly girls - being often forced to contribute to family income.
